Even given the veil of privacy surrounding Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s medical condition, which required her to travel to the US for surgery, more information on her unspecified cancer ailment is trickling out.
Sonia Gandhi had on Thursday undergone successful surgery at New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre. (More details here .)
Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari appealed to the media to show “sensitivity”, noting that even public personalities were entitled to “a certain amount of privacy insofar as medical conditions are concerned.”
Yet, media reports, citing sources close to Sonia Gandhi’s family, are piecing together the disjointed bits of information to put together a medical map of her condition. And from all indications, Sonia Gandhi was in “serious” condition, which required urgent surgical attention.
The Telegraph of the UK reported , quoting a source close to the family that Sonia Gandhi’s condition was “serious”, but that friends and relatives were “optimistic because she has remained otherwise fit.” The paper also quoted sources close to Sonia Gandhi as telling it that she had been receiving treatment for “an unspecified cancer” for at least eight months.
Strategic analyst Brahma Chellaney too noted that “Sonia Gandhi’s health problem must be serious, and the need for very specialised surger pressing, for her to fly all of a sudden to the US.”
The Times of India reports , citing unspecified sources, that Sonia Gandhi was advised by her doctors to go abroad for the surgery “because they felt she would convalesce better without the throng of visitors who would have clamoured to see her during the recovery.” The inconvenience that her presence in a hospital would have caused to other patients was another consideration, it added.
The report also noted that cancer specialist Dr Dattatreyudu Nori is the director of the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and professor and chairman of the radiation oncology department. Dr Nori graduated from Kurnool Medical College in Andhra Pradesh, and was once named one of the top doctors in America for the treatment of cancers in women.
