The wives of two top cops are contesting the Punjab state election on 30 January.

CNN IBN reported that the Shiromani Akali Dal’s candidate, first-timer Farzana Alam is the wife of retired Punjab DGP Mohammed Izhar Alam. Her opponent is Congress’ two-time MLA Razia Sultana, wife of Additional DGP Mohammed Mustafa. Both of them are competing for the Muslim-dominated Malerkotla constituency.

And the fight is on…

Razia Sultana said Farzana is banking on the work her ‘retired husband’ did for the constituency as the head of the Punjab Wakf Board. She said “My husband is currently in service. But Farzana’s husband is retired. He’s a fused bulb now, who’s done nothing in his entire tenure. How will his wife compete with me? The people know whom to vote for.”

Farzana on the other hand has accused Mustafa of misusing police machinery to get votes for wife Sultana.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Election Commission has taken note of complaints of Mustafa campaigning for his wife. It has asked the government to cancel his leave.

Usha Sharma, Electoral Officer, Punjab told CNN-IBN “We are keeping a vigilance on Mustafa’s ctivities. We will take action if we find him violating rules.”

For Punjab, a state where the police forces acquired unusual importance post terrorism, these contestants try to use police clout past and present to win the electoral battle. But will that be enough to get the voters to vote? Watch Video:
