The reactions and responses to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that Pakistan premier Gilani is a ‘man of peace’, play a prominent role in the newspapers this morning. On the one hand the move is being read as an unprecedented breakthrough in Indo-Pak ties. Yet many newspapers also seem to agree with former Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha’s statement that the Prime Minister seems to be letting Pakistan off the hook for doing very little with regards to investigating the 26/22 terror attacks in Mumbai.
In Islamabad too there is an air of skepticism, with newspapers saying that they expect Singh to come under attack for his statements once he returns to India. Apart from the Indo-Pak ties, the SAARC summit also saw India taking on the role of a benevolent big brother, announcing tariff freedoms and scholarships for SAARC member states. How all these grand statements will be implemented however remains to be seen:
