Gujarat polls: Who will care for the fishermen of Mundra?

As the present Gujarat government hopes for a return in power showcasing its development, there are few communities who faced the brunt of this progress. The fishing community in and around Mundra port is among them.

“The development of the Mundra port has eaten into the rights of the fishing community,” said Citizen Journalist Bharat Patel who shot this video for CNN-IBN.

Because of the coastal industrialisation, the fishermen have been rendered homeless. There is neither place to sit nor any space to move around. The mangroves have also been destroyed," he said.

Blaming the present government for turning a blind eye to the plight of the fishing community, the citizen journalist hoped that the next government will take care of the issue.

“The present government did nothing for the fishing community. I appeal to the next government to protect the rights of the fishermen. There are no basic facilities for this community and I appeal to the next government to provide them,” Patel said.

The state goes to polls on 13 and 17 December. The counting of votes is on 20 December.
