New Delhi: The government today rejected media reports that it is contemplating a statutory backing to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and complaints pertaining to violations will go out of the purview of the Election Commission.
The government clarified that the Union legislative secretary has not been asked to make any presentation before the Group of Ministers on Corruption at its scheduled meeting on 22 February on the issue.
“The contents of the report are totally misconceived as there is no such move under contemplation of the government or the Group of Ministers…. The GoM has not made any recommendation to make the Model Code of Conduct statutory or to take it outside the purview of the Commission,” a release from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions said.
It was widely reported that a statutory backing to the MCC will mean the code violations will be covered by law and hence be tried in a court rather than being left to the discretion of the Election Commission.
