After negotiations over compensation to be paid to the kin of two fishermen, who were allegedly killed by Italian marines off the coast of Kerala, the Italian government has reportedly reached an agreement to pay both families Rs one crore each.
Italian authorities and the families of the two slain fishermen reached an agreement on the compensation amount after multiple meetings between them last week, the Deccan Chronicle reported .
The two Indian fishermen, Ajesh Binki, 25, and Valentine Jelastine, 45, were allegedly mistaken as pirates and shot dead by the two security crew of cargo vessel Enrica Lexie on 15 February, about 14 nautical miles off Alappuzha in Kerala.
The family members of the two families had approached the Kerala High court seeking compensation. According to the Times of India , the families and the Italian government agreed on a compensation amount yesterday afternoon.
Following the agreement, Doramma, the wife of one of the slain fishermen, filed an application before the Kerala High court seeking to refer their compensation plea to a Lok Adalat for final settlement, the Deccan Chronicle reported.
She was also quoted as saying in the report that she would use the money for the education of her two children and would not allow them to take up fishing as an occupation.
Doramma’s legal counsel, C Unnikrishnan, who had been mediating during the negotiations was quoted as saying that the owners of the vessel Enrica Lexie had not offered an amount acceptable to them.
As per the new agreement, the compensation petition against the two marines would be withdrawn but it would not affect the criminal proceedings which are on against them, he was quoted as saying.
The two Italian marines, Latorre Massimillano and Salvatore Girone, are presently in judicial custody till 30 April. They are presently in the Thiruvanathapuram central prison.
Relatives of the two marines visited them in jail yesterday and are expected to be in the country for the next 10 days.
