In a big blow to the BSP’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh, curtains came down today on Chief Minister Mayawati’s famous statues, quite literally.
With less than a month to go before Assembly elections in the state, the Election Commission today decided that her statues and BSP’s party symbol, the elephant, had to be covered as they were in violation of the model code of conduct.
Several political parties had complained to the EC regarding the controversial statues of Mayawati and the elephant, spread all over the state.
Once it starts, the model code of conduct bars pictures, hoardings and calenders of political parties and their candidates from being on display on public property. The EC said the same logic also applied to the statues so they had to be covered.
