Assam: BJP leader Ramakanta Dewri's alleged sex video goes viral; MLA cries conspiracy to defame him

A BJP MLA from Assam is at the centre of a political storm after a sex video allegedly involving him went viral over several local television channels. In the video, Ramakanta Dewri, an MLA of Morigaon constituency, is purpotedly seen in a compromising position with a woman in a hotel room.

However, Dewri has denied the allegations and blamed his rivals for defaming him. He also told local TV channels that it is being circulated at a time when he is expected to get a berth in the Sarbanand Sonowal cabinet.

Denying that he was the person in the video, Dewri told PTI: "It (the video) is being manufactured by (those with) vested interests to be distributed to the media as part of a political conspiracy against me and to discredit me."

He has sought a forensic test of the video and said he would take legal action against those behind it. He also reiterated that he would quit politics if the forensic report establishes the person in the alleged sex video to be him.

Dewri has also submitted a memorandum to the Monitoring Committee for private television channels under the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry through Assam Assembly Speaker "to take action against the channels concerned".

Meanwhile, Assam BJP unit president Ranjit Das has expressed concern over the video appearing in a section of electronic media "tarnishing the image of BJP Morigaon MLA."  Das told PTI that the "fabricated" video footage against Dewri, which was telecast in some TV channels of Assam was "totally false" and was an attempt to "assassinate" the BJP MLA's character.

Morigaon district Superintendent of Police Swapnail Deka said Dewri has filed a criminal case against the editors of three local TV channels that had broadcast the video and a police investigation was on.

Four compact discs (CDs) of the video were distributed to four local TV channels with three airing it, Deka said.
