Unsurprisingly Anna Hazare has single handedly dominated every headline in the national newspapers again. Yesterdays late night talks between the government and Team Anna are the central focus, with newspapers looking at the compromises that have been reached, as well as the sticking points that still remain. There is also some level of analysis, as newspapers all give their take on what to make of the situation as it stands and what needs to be done in the future.
Apart from the news stories on page 1, there are also three very good edit pieces that we think are must reads today. The Hindustan Times edit by Ramachandra Guha compares the stand off between Anna Hazare and Manmohan Singh to the one between Jaiprakash Narayan and Indira Gandhi during emergency. The Indian Express carries an open letter to the PM by former Chief Justice J.S. Verma asking him to break the standoff and have all parties debate all versions of the Lokpal bill. And in The Hindu Prabhat Patnaik argues that the substitution of one man for ’the people’ is antithetical to democracy.
