The brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old photojournalist in Shakti Mill, Mumbai has caused nation-wide outrage and shock. Given that Mumbai is widely seen as one of India’s safest metro, the incident has left many asking whether this really holds true anymore.
“It is not just shameful, it is embarrassing. It is very disillusioning for me since I have been born and brought up in the city,” said Supriya Sule, MP from NCP. She said fast track courts should have zero tolerance to such crimes.
Best-selling author and well-known Mumbaikar Shobhaa De said that the myth of Mumbai being a safe city has been completely shattered.
“Mumbai was a city where women felt safe and were appreciated for their work. Such a thing can happen when there has been a break down in law and order,” she said.
