NGO makes portable desks from cartons for underprivileged kids

There is a sea of difference between schools in urban and rural India. While city schools are getting fancier every year with classrooms incorporating gadgets to help students learn better, rural schools don't have even the basic amenities like desks and chairs for students.

Peek into any classroom of a rural school, one would see students sitting on the floor crouching, their notebooks on the floor. The blackboards are at a height that makes it difficult for the children to read, making them crane their necks uncomfortably.

The absence of a proper seating arrangement leads to bad posture and eyesight among these students who come from underprivileged background.

An NGO created as a community service centre for marginalised families in urban slum and rural areas, Aarambh, wanted to solve these problems and came up with unique idea.

They used used discarded cartons, an economical and environment friendly option, to create portable desks, called the Help Desk, which also works as bags. The pre-set stencil design, which when cut and folded, creates a slick desk which also serves as a school bag. And all of this cost about Rs 10.
