It was just another Mumbai morning. A press release stated that the PETA founder was to transform herself into a bloodied, dying chicken for the ‘World Vegan Month’.
We made our way to the Azad Maidan gate, to find the media waiting, when suddenly the PETA founder Ingrid E. Newkirk, made way - dressed as a bloodied chicken, throat slit and lay on what looked like a chopping board, right in front of the BMC office.
PETA demonstrations and protests are known around the world for their methods and ways of going about revolting against common practices. “In India, more and more people are turning away from traditional diet and eating chickens particularly,” said Ingrid.
The silent demonstration went on for about an hour before the BMC intervened and disband their setup, citing lack of permissions from the BMC. PETA claimed to have police permissions.
With the beef ban having caused unrest on social media, we wonder what this demonstration will lead to and how vegans in the country will react.
