In 2014, 131,666 people committed suicide in India according to the National Crime Record Bureau report on Crime in India, 2014. That is more than twice the population of Greenland.

Among the top causes driving people into taking the ultimate step includes illness (physical and mental) (23,746), marriage related issues (6,773), love affairs (4,168), drug abuse/addiction (4,168) and failure in examination (2,403).

There is a slight improvements in the stats compared to the 2013 NCRB report, when 134,799 people committed suicide. But the numbers still quite alarming.

A staggering 30,659 males between the age of 30-45 committed suicide last year, while the age bracket of 18-30 saw the highest suicide among women, 17,527.

Going by the profession, 20,148 housewives committed suicides, followed by 15,735 daily wage earners. Farmer, the most covered of all groups, saw 5,650 suicides.
