The Air India plane that crashed shortly after take-off in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad hit the BJ Medical College hostel mess building, with many students feared injured.

“We are deeply shocked about the news of AI, crashing in Ahmedabad. News have become more gruesome after finding out that flight had crushed in BJMC, Hostel & many MBBS students have also been injured,” the FAIMA Doctors association said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

“We are monitoring the situation closely & are ready for any help,” it added.

FAIMA later released a statement, informing that several students were injured.

“A tragic incident occurred at the BJMC UG hostel mess, where an aircraft crashed, resulting in multiple student injuries and admissions to Civil Hospital Ahmedabad,” it said.

“However, there has been no official confirmation regarding casualties, including deaths or missing students,” it added.

The Air India flight AI171, bound for London, crashed shortly after take-off near Ahmedabad airport, confirmed the State Police Control Room. It was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

About 20-30 injuries have been reported after the Air India plane bound for London crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday (June 12), Dr Akshay Dongardhive of FAIMA told Network18.

“My son had gone to the hostel during lunch break, and the plane crashed there. My son is safe, and I have spoken to him. He jumped from the second floor, so he suffered some injuries,” Ramila told ANI.

Three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, comprising 90 personnel, have been moved from Gandhinagar to the plane crash site. An additional three teams are being dispatched from Vadodara, according to the NDRF.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences regarding the accident.

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected,” he said on X.

President Droupadi Murmu has also offered her condolences on the accident.

“I am deeply distressed to learn about the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. It is a heart-rending disaster. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected people. The nation stands with them in this hour of indescribable grief,” a statement by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.
