The Indian government has set up a resource centre in Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) to help migrant workers in the Gulf.
There have been several reported cases of exploitation and harassment of Indian workers in the past, while some are also forced to live in inhumane conditions.
The Indian Workers’ Resource Centre (IWRC) will help reduce the risk of workers being trafficked and exploited.
The IWRC will have a 24 hour helpline and a team of advisers.
According to government figures, there are around six million Indian migrants in the six Gulf states of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Oman.
This is the second Indian resource centre in the region. The first office was opened in Dubai in 2010.
