PM Modi meets Vice President-elect Jagdeep Dhankhar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met vice president-elect Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday evening to congratulate him on his win.

BJP president JP Nadda also met Dhankhar at the residence of union minister Pralhad Joshi.

The meetings came soon after Dhankhar was declared winner in the vice presidential election with 528 votes in his favour against 182 bagged by joint opposition candidate Margaret Alva.

Counting of votes underway; result expected soon

The counting of votes to declare the next vice president of India began on Saturday. The result is expected soon.

The voting began earlier this morning at 10 am and concluded at 5 pm. The contest is between NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankar, a former West Bengal Governor and the front-runner, and opposition candidate Margret Alva, a former union minister.

Around 93% of MPs vote in vice presidential poll

Around 93 per cent polling was recorded in the vice presidential election on Saturday, with more than 50 MPs not exercising their franchise.

Officials said of the total 780 MPs, as many as 725 MPs voted till 5 pm when the polling concluded.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his predecessor Manmohan Singh cast their ballots early in the day, while opposition leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi voted a little after noon, the officials said.

Over 85% MPs vote till 2 PM to elect next Vice President

Over 85 per cent votes were polled in the Vice Presidential election till 2 PM, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his predecessor Manmohan Singh casting their ballots early in the day, officials said.

Of the 780 MPs in both Houses — another eight Rajya Sabha seats are vacant — around 670 of them had cast their vote so far, they said.

The Trinamool Congress, which has 39 MPs, including 23 in Lok Sabha, has already announced its decision to abstain from this election.

National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Jagdeep Dhankhar (71) is pitted against Opposition’s Margaret Alva (80) for the post.

Who are entitled to vote in the vice presidential election?

All MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, including nominated members, are entitled to vote in the vice presidential election.

The two Houses of Parliament together have a sanctioned strength of 788 MPs, of which there are eight vacancies in the Upper House.

Hence, 780 MPs are eligible to cast their ballot in this election.

Polling to elect next Vice President underway; Modi, former PM Manmohan Singh cast vote

Polling to elect the next Vice President of India began at 10 am, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi being among the first ones to cast vote.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in a wheelchair and needed support to stand up and vote. CPM MP John Brittas was among those who helped the veteran leader in exercising his franchise. The two-term prime minister greeted those present with folded hands.

Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were among the leaders who turned up early at the Parliament House.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president JP Nadda, and Commerce Minister and Leader of House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal arrived together to cast their vote.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh, BJP chief whip Rakesh Singh, Telangana Rashtra Samithi MPs and Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party’s Raghu Rama Krishna Raju vote were among the others that have cast their vote so far.

TMC to not vote in vice-president polls

Trinamool Congress (TMC) had decided to abstain from the vote, as they pointed out on ’not been consulted” on Margaret Alva’s candidature.

TMC MP and Parliamentary Party leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay wrote to Sisir Adhikari, who is an MP from TMC, informing him to abstain from voting as decided by the party.

Polling to elect the next Vice President of India began at 10 am, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi being among the first ones to cast vote.

The polling will continue till 5 pm, following which the counting of ballots will take place.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee and former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar (71) is pitted against joint Opposition candidate Margaret Alva (80).

With the ruling BJP having an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha and 91 members in the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar has a clear edge over his rival. He is likely to succeed incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu, whose tenure ends on 10 August.
