Chennai: Former National Security Advisor and Governor of West Bengal MK Narayanan was attacked with a slipper on Wednesday by a suspected pro-Tamil activist at a programm in Chennai.
According to the police and eyewitnesses, the accused, identified as Prabhakaran (35), hurled the footwear at Narayanan at a programm in Chennai to discuss about the problems of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. A report by The Hindustan Times said that according to eyewitnesses, the person shouted slogans and hurled slippers that hit Narayanan on his shoulder and head at the meeting.
The event was a colloquium titled ‘The Future of Tamil Refugees in India’ and Narayanan was a key speaker. According to this report in the Livemint , the event was organized by The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy.
Prabhakaran is a Sri-Lankan Tamil from Aranthangi in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu. The report in Livemint further added that Prabhakaran alleged that Narayanan was responsible for the death of 150,000 Tamils in Sri Lanka.
“Narayanan is responsible for the plight of Lankan Tamils” and “resolutions on Lanka (moved by Amma) had been ignored by the Centre”, The Hindustan Times quoted him as saying.
Narayanan did not suffer any injuries and laughed off the incident, sources said.
Prabhakaran was immediately detained by police and taken for interrogation.
