New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Wednesday constituted an all-women judge bench comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Bela M Trivedi, for the third time in history.
The two-women judge bench will hear a batch of cases pertaining to transfer petitions involving matrimonial disputes and bail matters.
Earlier in 2013, the apex court had set up an all-woman bench comprising Justices Gyan Sudha Misra and Ranjana Prakash Desai followed by a bench of Justices R Banumathi and Indira Banerjee in 2018.
Currently, the top court has only three female judges: Justices Kohli, BV Nagarathna, and Trivedi. Justice Nagarthana will become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027 for 36 days.
Now, the SC has a working strength of 27 judges against a sanctioned strength of 34.
In 2020, the Chief Justice of Madras High Court Amreshwar Pratap Sahi constituted its first-ever-all-women bench comprising three judges to answer a reference made to its by a division bench comprising two judges.
