Samudra Pratap: India commissions first indigenously built pollution control vessel in Goa

India has commissioned its first indigenously built pollution control vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’. Designed by the Indian Coast Guard the vessel was commissioned by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Goa on Monday during his two-day visit in the state in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

The 114.5-metre vessel has over 60 per cent of indigenous content. The 4,200-tonne vessel boasts a speed of more than 22 knots and an endurance of 6,000 nautical miles.

It is the first dedicated pollution control vessel, marking a major milestone in India’s maritime environmental protection capabilities.

The vessel will serve as a critical platform for enforcing marine pollution control regulations, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

The vessel was formally delivered in December to the Coast Guard at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).

During the commissioning of Samudra Pratap, Defence Minister Rajnath SIngh said, “The Coast Guard has instilled this fear even in our enemies that if they so much as dare to look toward India’s maritime borders, the Indian Coast Guard will leave them in no condition see with their eyes."

“That is why the enemy does not attempt any misadventure,” he further added.  

Defence Minister was welcomed during his two day visit and Minister for Protocol, Shri Mauvin Godinho, received him on his arrival at INS Hansa, Dabolim.  

The commissioning ceremony was done under heightened maritime vigilance by the Coast Guard.  

The Indian Coast Guard further strengthens its operational readiness while reinforcing India’s commitment to maritime safety, environmental protection, and indigenous defence manufacturing.
