Putin calls India-Russia partnership 'independent, strategic and future-focused'

At a joint press conference with PM Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored the expanding scope of India–Russia cooperation, describing the partnership as “independent, strategic and future-focused.”

Putin said the two countries are building India’s largest nuclear power plant at Kudankulam, where two of six reactors are already operational and four more are under construction. Once fully commissioned, the project will significantly enhance India’s supply of clean and affordable energy. Moscow and New Delhi are also exploring collaboration on small modular reactors, floating nuclear plants, and other peaceful nuclear applications in medicine and agriculture.

The Russian President announced plans for a major Russian–Indian pharmaceutical facility in the Kaluga region to produce advanced anti-tumour drugs using Indian technology. He added that Russian companies would increase participation in manufacturing under India’s Make in India initiative.

Putin noted strengthening cultural and educational ties, and said the launch of the RT news channel in India would allow audiences to engage more closely with Russian perspectives.

He emphasised that India and Russia pursue independent foreign policies and cooperate in BRICS and the SCO to promote a “more just and democratic multipolar world order.”

Expressing satisfaction with his discussions with PM Modi, Putin said he was confident the visit would further reinforce the bilateral strategic partnership.

Putin in India LIVE: Energy security strong pillar of India–Russia ties, says PM Modi

“Energy security has been a strong and important pillar of the India–Russia partnership. Our decades-old cooperation in civil nuclear energy has been crucial in realising our shared clean energy priorities. We will continue this win-win cooperation. Our cooperation in critical minerals is crucial to ensuring secure and diversified supply chains across the world. This will provide strong support to our partnership in clean energy, high-tech manufacturing, and new-age industries,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

“Our deep cooperation in shipbuilding has the potential to strengthen Make in India. This is another excellent example of our win-win cooperation, which will boost jobs, skills, and regional connectivity.”

Putin in India LIVE: ‘India-Russia friendship has remained steadfast like the pole star’, says PM Modi

PM Modi said, “The world has witnessed many ups and downs in the last eight decades. However, the friendship between India and Russia has remained like a pole star. This relationship is built on mutual respect and trust… Today, we have held discussions on all factors that will help strengthen this relationship.”

Putin in India LIVE: On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India to kick start his two-day visit to the country. While India continues to remain a strong ally of Russia, this was Putin’s first visit to New Delhi since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022. Upon arrival, Putin received a warm welcome from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who broke with the established protocols for the Russian delegation.

Putin’s state visit will mark the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he will hold talks with the Indian Prime Minister on regional and global issues of mutual interest. As per the schedule, which is subject to change, the Russian leader will also meet President Droupadi Murmu, in addition to paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

Several agreements are expected to be signed during the Russian leader’s trip to India. The deals are likely to cover areas such as trade, economy, healthcare, academia, culture, and media. Both sides believe that the broader goal of the visit is to shore up the bilateral strategic and economic partnership between the two nations, against the backdrop of a sharp downturn in India’s relations with the US.
