Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chosen the codename ‘Operation Sindoor’ for India’s strikes on terrorist sites on Wednesday, sources told PTI.

India struck nine terrorist facilities in Pakistan-proper and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) in the early hours of Wednesday in response to the Pahalgam attack, according to an official statement.

The sites that India struck were those from “where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed”, the statement read.

The codename ‘Operation Sindoor’ is a reference to ‘sindoor’ (vermilion) that many Hindu women wear as a signifier of marriage. In the Pahalgam attack, Hindu men were singled out from people and shot dead in front of their wives and children by terrorists.

In the Pahalgam attack, terrorists killed 26 men, 25 of whom were terrorists and one was a local Kashmiri.

Pakistan has dubbed Indian strikes an "act of war" .

The nine targets that India struck are:

  • Markaz Subhan Allah, Bahawalpur;

  • Markaz Taiba, Muridke

  • Sarjal Tehra Kalan

  • Mehmoona Joya Facility, Sialkot

  • Markaz Ahle Hadith Barnala, Bhimber

  • Markaz Abbas, Kotli

  • Maskar Raheel Shahid, Kotli

  • Shawai Nallah Camp, Muzaffarabad

  • Markaz Syedna Bilal

Bahawalpur and Muridke in Pakistan’s Punjab are highly important in addition to Muzaffarabad in POJK.

Jaish-e-Mohammed’s headquarter is in Bahawalpur, Lashkar-e-Taiba’s HQ is in Muridke, and Hizbul Mujahideen’s HQ is in #Muzaffarabad.
