Aizawl (Mizoram): Police in Mizoram arrested a couple in connection with suspected sexual abuse and death of their 2-year-old daughter on September 16. The infant toddler died in a private hospital while being treated for acute Loryngotracheobrontis (ALTB) with severe respiratory distress. The doctor, who examined the body at the time of handover after death, spotted old healed wounds on her private part, the police said. Police registered a suo-moto case under relevant sections of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on September 20. Nine days later, on September 29, a well-known social activist Vanramchhuangi aka Ruatfela Nu filed a police complaint accusing the child’s parents as prime suspects and demanded their immediate arrest. Police had conducted a forensic examination of the child’s samples at a forensic science laboratory which revealed that “semen was not detected from the exhibits,” the statement said. The cops, as part of the investigation, questioned several people, including the child’s parents, grandparents, other relatives and local leaders of the girl’s locality. Consequently, on October 1, the cops first arrested the father and two days later the mother was arrested as they appeared to be the prime suspects in the case, a police statement said. “The parents of the child were the prime suspects, as they had always maintained during examination, that the custody of the child always remained with them only. Hence, on the basis of the circumstantial evidence, the father of the child was arrested on October 1 and subsequently the mother was also arrested on October 3 for sustained and thorough custodial interrogation,” the police statement said. Meanwhile, the girl’s family had also filed a police complaint denying the allegations. Aizawl Superintendent of Police (SP) C Lalruaia said the two complaints were not registered as the suo-moto case was already registered for the same incident and the case is under investigation.
