Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the Pahalgam terrorist attack was a plot to incite riots in India.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a debate on Operation Sindoor, Modi said that the conspiracy was foiled as Indians remained united after the attack.

“The brutal attack in Pahalgam on April 22, and the way terrorists killed innocent people after asking their religion, was the height of cruelty. It was a planned attempt to incite riots in India. I want to thank the people of India for standing united against that conspiracy,” said Modi.

On April 22, terrorists killed 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. Pakistan-based The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack. India launched Operation Sindoor to punish the terrorist groups and their supporters on the night of May 6-7.

India attacked terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) on the intervening night of May 6-7. The next day, after Pakistan targeted India’s civilian and military sites, India struck Pakistani military sites, including airbases and air defence sites.

After four days of conflict, Pakistan reached out to India with a request of a ceasefire on May 10 that India granted.

In his speech, Modi said that US Vice President JD Vance called him on the night of May 9 to and said Pakistan was planning a big attack. Modi said that he told Vance that if Pakistan would mount a big attack, India would respond with a bigger attack. “Goli ka jawaab gola hoga,” Modi said he told Vance.
