- Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi is out of jail, a day after he was granted bail by the Bombay High court in a case where he was accused of sedition and insulting national symbols. The cartoonist, who has been defiant since his arrest said that he would continue his battle for freedom of expression and against the sedition law. Trivedi’s cartoons were used during the India Against Corruption (IAC) anti-corruption rally and he was arrested on 8th September after he surrendered to the Mumbai Police in the case.

- IAC activist Arvind Kejriwal who travelled to Kudankulam to express support for the people’s agitation against the nuclear power plant called for a public debate to allay the fears of the villagers. He also slammed what he called terror tactics by Jayalalithaa and the Tamil Nadu police.

- In world news, the US ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other embassy staff were killed in a rocket attack on Tuesday night that targeted his car in Benghazi. A Libyan official said the US ambassador had been on his way to a safer venue after protesters attacked the US Consulate in Benghazi and opened fire, killing a staff member, in protest at a US film that they deemed blasphemous to the Prophet Mohammad. Following the attack, Barack Obama called for the stepping up of security for US envoys across the world.
- The death toll from a pair of devastating factory fires that broke out in Pakistan’s two biggest cities rose to 271 people, many of whom perished because they were unable to escape buildings that lacked emergency exits and basic safety equipment such as alarms and sprinklers. At least 246 people died in the Karachi garment factory fire while 25 more died in a fire in a shoe factory in Lahore.
- In sport, MS Dhoni and co have reached Sri Lanka, where the World T20 starts in a few days. The captain said that India’s success at the tournament will depend on how they react to the pitches in Sri Lanka— which he believes have changed over the years. In football, international giants Spain, England, Germany and Argentina all struggled in the World Cup qualfying rounds. You can find all the match reports on the Sports page.
