- The Delhi police have claimed that they have nabbed one of the handlers of the gunmen who participated in the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. Home Minister P Chidambaram has confirmed the arrest of Lashker-e-Taiba’s Sayed Zabiuddin alias Abu Jindal. Home Ministry officials, however, refused to confirm or deny the reports that Jindal, who was arrested on 21 June when he arrived in India, was deported from a Gulf country. India had also secured an Interpol Red Corner notice against him in which he was accused of crimes involving the use of weapons, explosives and terrorism.
- Reserve Bank of India came out with measures to boost capital inflow into the country, aimed to support the free fall of the rupee. The RBI has raised the external commercial borrowing limit to $10 billion and increased the foreign institutional investors’ investment limit in government securities by $5 billion to $20 billion.
- As the Air India pilot strike enters it’s 50th day, the management continues to maintain their stance that the pilots should unconditionally end their strike and come back to work. During this time only 6 out of out of 20 Boeing 777s are flying, while 14 others are currently sitting idle at the Delhi airport. 11 pilots also went on an indefinite hunger strike.
- The Haryana government ordered a magisterial probe into the death of the five-year-old baby Mahi who fell into a 80-foot borewell in Manesar. Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condoled the death of Mahi and said her family would be adequately compensated. Hoping to get the inquiry report at the earliest, Hooda said those found guilty would not be spared.
- Over to world news and Egypt’s Presidential Election Commission announced that Mohammed Morsi, head of the Brotherhood’s political front, the Freedom and Justice Party, won a narrow but clear victory in the troubled nation. Mr Mursi could be sworn in on 30 June, although questions remain over the extent of his authority. The ruling military council has taken control of many of the president’s powers and has dissolved parliament.
- In sport, Italy beat England 4-2 on penalties last night to enter the semifinals of Euro 2012. This was England’s sixth defeat in seven penalty shootouts. The draws for the Wimbledon has been announced and the duo of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek could take on Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna after both pairs were drawn in the same half.
- Samsung expects sales of its new Galaxy S III, launched at the end of last month as a main rival to Apple’s iPhone, to top 10 million during July, making it the South Korean group’s fastest selling smartphone.
