Narendra Modi has taken oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third straight term.
As the head of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, Modi will lead a Cabinet that will be a mix of old and new faces.
While Modi is set to keep the ‘Big 4’ portfolios of Home, Defence, Finance, External Affairs and retain Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, and S Jaishankar, several new faces are set to be part of the 3rd Modi Ministry.
As it’s an NDA government and not just of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), there is an increased representation of non-BJP partners. Even as the portfolios are yet to be allocated, it has been learnt that there was intense jostling for portfolios like the railways among the NDA partners.
Previously, leaders of the NDA on Friday unanimously elected Modi as the leader of the NDA Parliamentary Party. Later in the day, the NDA staked claim to form the government, and, after President Droupadi Murmu satisfied herself that the alliance had enough numbers, she appointed Modi as the Prime Minister-designate of India.
Following the formation of the new government, the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is likely to begin around June 15. In the new session, the newly elected candidates will take oath as members of the House and the new Speaker will be elected.
The next day, President Murmu will address a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, thus formally inaugurating the session.
The final call on the dates of the session will be taken by the new Union Cabinet. During the session, Modi will also introduce members of his Council of Ministers to both the Houses. The session is likely to conclude on June 22.
