A landslide in the Antop Hill area of central Mumbai killed at least two persons and injured one critically, fire officials said.
Another four to five people are feared trapped under the debris, the officials told Firstpost.
Two persons have been pulled from the debris, but were declared dead by medical authorities, while another person is in critical condition in Sion Hospital, officials said.
Two other persons were later pulled from the debris and sent to a hospital for further treatment.
The incident, which was triggered by the overnight rain, took place around 8 am today in an area which is prone to landslides.
The area in which the landslide took place consists mainly of huts and due to narrow roads the fire department was unable to take vehicles into the area.
Rescue officials were forced to manually dig through debris in order to find survivors.
Local residents said that the residents of the houses affected by the landslide had been advised to vacate their homes recently by the city’s civic body. However, they hadn’t moved since no alternate accomodation had been offered, the residents said.
The BMC has reportedly sent a forty-member team to the spot, and three ambulances have been rushed to the spot.
