Alleged Indian Mujahideen operative Afzal Usmani escapes from Mumbai court

In what comes in as a major embarrassment for the Mumbai Police, alleged Indian Mujahideen terrorist Afzal Usmani on Friday escaped from the MCOCA court while he was about to be presented before it.

Mumbai: In what comes in as a major embarrassment for the Mumbai Police, alleged Indian Mujahideen terrorist Afzal Usmani on Friday escaped from the MCOCA court while he was about to be presented before it.

According to CNN-IBN, Mumbai Police said he “disappeared” outside the court, and a massive manhunt has been launched.

He was brought to the sessions court from Taloja jail.

While he was being taken to the fifth floor of the sessions court for case where the arguments on framing charges was about to start at 2:45 pm, he escaped.

Usmani had earlier tried to escape when he was arrested in 2008. His arrest revealed the Indian Mujahideen’s role in several terror cases across the country.

Mumbai Police say Usmani is a car thief who used to provide vehicles for terror strikes. He was arrested in connection with the 2008 Ahmedabad and Surat blasts.

According to an NDTV report , Usmani was allegedly a member of a Mumbai underworld gang. He was earlier booked for attempt to murder in 1996.
