One person was killed and three others, including a woman, were injured when a major fire broke out at a godown in Kandivali (E) in north Mumbai on Monday. Unverified reports from the area suggested that 25 to 30 gas cylinders had exploded.
TV channels reported that twelve fire engines were rushed to the spot and a probe is on to ascertain the cause of the fire. There is no clarity yet how the fire originated.
According to Times Now reports, the cylinders were allegedly stored in a godown building which is adjacent to the Western Express Highway.
Massive plumes of smoke were blowing out of the building, said eye witnesses.
The fire station got a call at around 12.45 pm on Monday. According to the local fire brigade station, the fire began at around 12.30 p.m, after which between 16 and 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
There could have been a lot of damage as the fire was in a residential area. According to reports, this is considered by the fire station as a category two fire. Speaking to Firstpost, a fire brigade official said that a category two fire is one in which more than 15 fire tenders are sent to control the blaze. Such a fire is higher in intensity than a category one fire, for which a lesser number of fire tenders need to be sent.
