Assembly Election Results 2024 Live: NDA sees record win in Maharashtra, INDIA victorious in Jharkhand

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the final tally from Jharkhand assembly election results. The incumbent Jan Mukti Morcha (JMM), led by CM Hemant Soren, has won 34 seats with 23.44 per cent voter share. BJP won 21 seats with 33.18 per cent vote share, while Congress won 16 seats with 15.54 per cent vote share.

PM Modi said the people have dismissed Congress, adding that only one constitution would be applicable in India. He said the country would always reject anyone who talks of two constitutions.

PM Modi went on to say that while Congress has tried to bring up the wall of Section 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, “no power in the world can bring it back.”

PM Modi praised his “good friend” Devendra Fadnavis, CM Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and lauded the efforts of the NDA workers for this record election result in Maharashtra.

“This is the biggest win for any pre-poll alliance in a state– this has not been achieved in the past 50 years!” PM Modi said.

He also emphasised that Maharashtra is sixth state which has given BJP mandate for three straight terms.

Hitting out at Congress, PM Modi said that the Congress and its ecosystem thought that by lying about the Constitution and reservation, they could divide the people on the lines of SC, ST, and OBC groupings. He went on to say that Maharashtra has proved them wrong, standing by the “ek hai toh safe hai [safety in unity]” mantra given by the BJP.

He said that “ek hai toh safe hai” has become the mahamantra of the country.

PM Modi said “lies and deceit” had lost in Maharashtra.

He also said, “The people have reiterated their faith in the BJP. The people of Maharashtra have strengthened the plan for a Viksit Bharat…The results show that the country only trusts BJP and NDA when it comes to development.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the BJP HQ victory celebrations in Delhi, said that the agenda of development, good governance, and “true” social justice have won in Maharashtra today.

He hit out at the opposition saying that divisionary forces and dynastic politics have been defeated in the state today.

BJP national president JP Nadda, while addressing party workers, said “The people have endorsed PM Modi’s leadership and agenda of development in the latest round of elections.”

He also hit out at Uddhav Thackeray, saying that BJP had won the 2019 elections as well but Thackeray betrayed them. He said that Maharashtra has rejected him in these elections.

Meeting of all newly-elected Shiv Sena (SHS) representatives is set to be held tomorrow at 11:30 am at Taj Lands Hotel, Mumbai

The agenda includes the selection of the Shiv Sena Legislative Group Leader. Following the selection, the newly appointed Group Leader will submit a proposal to the Governor for government formation

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis won the assembly polls from Nagpur South West. He defeated his Congress rival Prafulla Gudhade Patil by a margin of 39,710 votes.

He has won from the seat for the fourth time.

However, the BJP stalwart’s victory margin reduced by 9,643 votes when compared to the 2019 polls.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi took to social media platform X to congratulate Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, his wife Kalpana Soren, and all the leaders of the Congress party, workers and every member of the alliance for INDIA’s landslide victory in Jharkhand. “The public has approved the work of the alliance government and the hard work of all of you. I thank the people of the state from the bottom of my heart.”

She addressed Maharashtra election results in the same tweet. “The results in Maharashtra were not as per our expectations,” she wrote. However, unlike Uddhav Thackeray, Pawan Khera, and Jairam Ramesh, Priyanka Gandhi did not bring EVMs. “In democracy, people are supreme. There are wins and losses in elections – we will learn from both victory and defeat. We will listen to the voice of the people and walk firmly and humbly on the path of service,” she wrote.

Congress leader Pawan Khera raised questions about BJP’s victory in the Maharashtra polls.

“The Lok Sabha election was fought in the name of Modi ji in Maharashtra, BJP lost it. The same state gives the same BJP 132 out of 148 seats within 4-5 months. What kind of strike rate is this? …Is this strike rate possible?” he asked.

Khera wasn’t the only one.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and the state’s former chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray, alleged foul play after the MVA suffered a rout against the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra, saying it could be the “victory of EVM”.

He also said the MVA raised real issues during the campaign and said the results were unexpected.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren expressed gratitude to people of the state for INDIA bloc’s stellar performance in the assembly polls. He claimed that the alliance had passed the exam of democracy.

The coalition comprising the JMM, Congress, RJD and CPIM(L) Liberation is headed for a decisive victory, having won 31 seats and leading in 24 others. Soren has already won from the Barhait seat by a margin of 39,791 votes, pipping BJP’s Gamliyel Hembrom.

“We have passed the exam of democracy in Jharkhand; we will finalise our strategy after the election results,” Soren said at a press conference here.

Soren also said Jharkhand is set to script ‘Abua Raj, Abua Sarkar’ (own state, own govt).

After Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi’s overall strike rate dipped to 56 per cent but he made up for it in the Maharashtra assembly elections.

Wherever PM Modi went to campaign, victory followed. BJP contested in 35 seats where PM Modi held speeches. The party won in 26 of those seats which adds up to a strike rate of over 74 per cent.

There are clear geographical trends that have emerged in Jharkhand. The BJP has only managed to win seats in the northern part of the state, while support from Congress and JMM is also seen clearly in ‘belts’ in the southern and northwestern part of the state.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s brother, Basant Soren, won the Dumka assembly seat by a margin of 14,588 votes, according to the Election Commission.

BJP candidate Sunil Soren came in second, receiving 81,097 votes, while the JMM candidate secured 95,685 votes.

Basant Soren had previously won the Dumka seat in a bypoll in 2020, defeating BJP’s Lois Marandi by 6,842 votes.

In 2019, Hemant Soren contested in two seats— Barhait and Dumka— and won both. He later vacated the Dumka seat, which allowed his brother, Basant Soren, to get elected in the bypoll.

Here’s how the leads in Maharashtra Assembly elections changed throughout the day on Saturday. By 2 pm, the Mahayuti alliance had 220 seats

CM Hemant Soren-led Jan Mukti Morcha was leading in 57 of the 81 seats in Jharkhand. The NDA was ahead in 23 seats, according to News18.

According to the ECI’s website, JMM had won 8 seats and was leading in 27 of them. BJP had both won one seat each. While the BJP was leading in 19 seats, Congress was leading in 15 of them.

The BJP appears to be losing the race in Jharkhand despite having anti-incumbency in its favour this time around (JMM has been in power for two terms). Even after giving its all in campaigning, bringing out star faces like PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the saffron party seems to be on the losing end. One major factor in this could be that BJP made the mistake of not announcing a CM face in the state.

Jharkhand is home to 32 tribal groups, including the Munda tribe, which is the largest scheduled tribe (ST) in the state. Other significant tribes include the Gond, one of the largest tribes globally, and the Santhal, the third-largest tribal group in India, known for living in concentrated settlements near rivers and forests.

What BJP missed capitalising on was a strong concern among the people about whether there would be a tribal CM if the party wins. JMM, of course, has already delivered on this.

Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly election results have sent a clear message that regional parties have always been and will continue to be the future of Indian politics, BRS working president K T Rama Rao said on Saturday.

In a post on ‘X’, he said the Congress party fails to become a strong opposition, but is hellbent on destroying regional parties and it has become a recurring theme.

“The writing is on the wall! Today’s Maharashtra and Jharkhand election results have sent a clear message: Regional parties have always been and will continue to be the future of Indian politics. As the Mahauyti alliance is all set to form government in Maharashtra, BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Mahayuti leaders for their cohesive campaign and governance, leading to the resounding victoryof the alliance in Maharashtra.

Tawde highlighted voters’ trust in the ruling alliance, attributing the success to their dissatisfaction with the political disruption caused by Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray in 2019.

Union Minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari congratulated the Mahayuti for the stellar performance in the Maharashtra assembly polls and said the ruling alliance prioritised development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As per trends available on the Election Commission data, the Mahayuti was leading in more than 210 of the 288 assembly seats, with BJP itself having the upper hand on more than 120 seats. The half way mark is 144.

“Heartfelt congratulations to the people of Maharashtra for the historic victory of the BJP-Mahayuti alliance in the Assembly elections! Under the leadership of PM Narendramodi Ji, the BJP-Mahayuti has consistently prioritised development and remains committed to Maharashtra’s holistic progress and the aspirations of its people,” Gadkari said in a post on X.

“I firmly believe that the double-engine government, inspired by PM Modi Ji’s vision, will accelerate the state’s growth to greater heights. I extend my sincere congratulations to PM Narendra Modi Ji, Party President JPNadda Ji, CM Eknath Shinde ji, Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis Ji and AjitPawar Ji, and BJP leaders and Mahayuti Karyakartas for this outstanding achievement,” he added.

With the Mahayuti poised for a landslide victory in the Maharashtra elections, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday said the coalition does not have a definitive formula that the party bagging the most seats will get the chief minister’s post.

He said the poll trends were in favour of the Mahayuti because of his flagship initiative, the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana.

Early trends have indicated that the Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, will retain the power in Maharashtra.

Speaking to reporters, Shinde said, “I thank all my ladki bahins (dear sisters) in the state and the brothers who voted in large numbers for us. The voting trend is an endorsement of our work.” “Every section of society voted for us because of our development efforts. The public has noticed our work and responded through their ballots,” he said, adding that this outcome has increased their responsibility.

Shinde emphasised that his government always had a pro-people approach, which is why it is on its way to record a landslide victory, and he outlined the administration’s commitment to development projects and welfare schemes.

For the first time ever, an alliance has crossed 200 seats in Maharashtra.

The BJP alone has secured more seats than the entire MVA combined, solidifying its status as the most trusted party in the state.

Maharashtra has joined the list of Indian states where the BJP has secured three consecutive election victories, underscoring the party’s consistent appeal and governance model.

With this milestone, Maharashtra becomes the sixth state in India where BJP has achieved this remarkable feat, joining the ranks of Goa, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh.

From an obscure corporator to becoming the youngest mayor of Nagpur, to the first BJP chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis’ climb up the political ladder has been steady, as he looks all set to occupy the state’s top post for the third time.

In a state dominated by Maratha politics and politicians, the 54-year-old leader, with deep roots in RSS, is only the second Brahmin after BJP’s estranged ally Shiv Sena’s Manohar Joshi to become the state’s chief minister.

Ahead of the 2014 assembly polls, the soft spoken and portly leader was a clear favourite for the coveted post, largely due to the confidence he enjoyed of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leader Amit Shah.

“Devendra is Nagpur’s gift to the country,” Modi had said of him at an election rally.

Though Modi had launched a campaign blitzkrieg in the 2014 Lok Sabha and Maharashtra assembly polls, a portion of the credit also went to Fadnavis, then state BJP president, for the party’s unprecedented victories in the elections.

JMM-led INDIA bloc was leading in 50 of the 81 assembly seats in Jharkhand while the NDA was ahead in 30, according to trends available on the Election Commission’s website on Saturday.

Counting of votes began at 8 AM.

According to trends, INDIA bloc was leading in 50 seats — JMM 30, Congress 14 and allies 6 — and NDA in 30 till noon.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren was leading in the Barhait assembly constituency by a margin of 8,202 votes over BJP’s Gamliyel Hembrom after the third round of counting.

JMM legislator and wife of Jharkhand CM Kalpana Soren was trailing by 3,019 votes against BJP’s Muniya Devi after fourth round.

BJP state chief Babulal Marandi was leading by 8,720 votes over CPIML’s Rajkumar Yadav after second round of counting.

Former CM and BJP nominee Champai Soren was leading by 8,542 votes in Seraikela against JMM’s Ganesh Mahli after third round.

BJP legislator Pravin Darekar on Saturday demanded that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis be appointed as the next chief minister of the state with early trends in the counting of votes for the assembly elections suggesting a win for the Mahayuti combine.

In the alliance, the party that secures the highest number of seats will be entitled to get the chief minister’s post, he asserted.

The ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance appeared set to retain power in the state, and was leading in 218 of the 288 assembly seats, as per the latest figures in the counting of votes by the Election Commission. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was stumbling, with its candidates leading in just 50 seats.

As per ECI figures, in the Mahayuti, BJP candidates were leading in 128 seats, Shiv Sena in 55 and NCP in 35 seats.
