In the Lok Sabha discussion on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the significance of the song “Vande Mataram” on the occasion of 150th anniversary of the national song written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.

PM Modi during his address and opening remarks in the lower house highlighted the Congress’ unacceptance of the national song as the view of then Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.

PM Modi slammed the ideologies of Jinnah and opposed the view of Nehru who was supporting it. “Muhammad Ali Jinnah raised a slogan against Vande Mataram on 15 October 1937 from Lucknow,” PM Modi said.

“Instead of giving a response to the Muslim League’s baseless statements, Nehru started investigating Vande Mataram. Five days after this, Nehru wrote a letter to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose mentioning that he agrees with the feeling of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and wrote, ‘Vande Mataram’s background in the Anand Math can irritate Muslims,” PM Modi further continued.

He also recalled the situation of the country when Vande Mataram completed 100 years. “When ‘Vande Mataram’ celebrated its 100th anniversary, the country was entangled in the Emergency… when it celebrated its 100th anniversary, the Constitution was strangled,” PM said.

“Now, at 150 years, it is a good opportunity to restore the glory of ‘Vande Mataram’… which won us freedom in 1947.”

During the ongoing winter session of Parliament, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the country’s warriors like Sardar Vallabha Patel and Birsa Munda and Guru Teg Bahadur.

“We have celebrated 75 years of our constitution. We are also celebrating 150 years of Sardar Patel and Birsa Munda. We are also celebrating 350 years of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Vande Mataram is not merely a mantra for political freedom. It was not just about making the British leave. It was more than that. It showed millions that the struggle was not just for a piece of land. It was about resurrecting the glorious past of India.”
