IndiGo flight cancellations Live: Congress blames Centre for IndiGo crisis, says government ignored warnings, allowed aviation duopoly

As IndiGo struggles to restore normal operations, the Congress on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Centre and the civil aviation ministry, accusing them of being completely unprepared for a crisis that had been “building for over a year and a half.”
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Congress MP Shashikant Senthil said the DGCA had ample time to enforce its own Flight Duty Time Limitation rules, first issued in early 2024, yet failed to ensure airlines complied. He questioned why the ministry did nothing despite knowing a major airline operation.
“These are its own guidelines, and it knew that a major airline, practically a monopoly/duopoly in the country, was not prepared. What was the Ministry doing, fully aware that this crisis was inevitable? It is not as if they were unaware. Yet the entire country was pushed into chaos, and all of this happened at a time when the President of Russia was visiting India. On one hand, they showcase Viksit Bharat; on the other, this is the reality unfolding before the world,” he said.

IndiGo flight cancellations Live: ALPA India questions Ministry’s move to delay FDTL rules, flags safety concerns

The Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA) has criticised the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s move to place the revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) in abeyance. Following a meeting held on December 5, 2025, between the Ministry and pilot unions, the government announced that the implementation of the updated fatigue-mitigation standards would be put on hold. ALPA India said it is “deeply concerned that this step directly contradicts the Hon’ble Court’s directions” and undermines aviation-safety principles rooted in scientific evidence.

The association warned that delaying the enforcement of the revised FDTL norms not only weakens judicial authority but also increases operational risks for both pilots and passengers. “Keeping the FDTL in abeyance places pilots and passengers at heightened risk by delaying essential fatigue protections,” ALPA India stated in its release. The pilots’ body urged the Ministry and the regulator to comply with the Court’s mandate “in both letter and spirit” and reaffirmed that pilot and passenger safety must take precedence over commercial considerations.
