IIT placements get off to a record start

The placement season in various IITs has already reached a new record, with some campuses like Kanpur bagging 672 offers on just the first day of the drive, making it the highest first-day tally in the institute’s history.

The numbers, which are 16 per cent higher than last year’s Day 1 tally, are a reflection of how IIT Kanpur has been maintaining a premium talent pool. Placement drive across IITs began on December 1.

According to a report by the Times of India, by the end of Day 1, 627 students had landed positions, including Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), marking a 20 per cent increase over the previous season.

PPOs made up a significant portion of the total, with 253 offers,  a 27 per cent rise from last year. Nine students received international offers, underscoring the institute’s growing global presence.

Which companies took part in the drive?

More than 250 companies, including top global and domestic firms, have shown interest or have participated in this year’s placement drive at IIT Kanpur.

Among the major recruiters are Accenture, BlackRock, HSBC, SAP, Airbus, PwC, Navi, Qualcomm, Deutsche Bank, and others.

The institute’s Students’ Placement Office have said that the feat was made possible with the support of hiring partners, and noted that the record Day 1 performance reflects “the students’ dedication, the faculty’s mentorship, and the continued trust of the industry in IIT Kanpur.”

How have other IITs done?

The story is more or less the same in other Indian Institute of Technology campuses, too. For example, in IIT Bombay, the first day of the drive saw 98 job offers. According to a report by the Hindustan Times, Da Vinci offered the highest package of about Rs 1.48 crore.

Sources told the outlet that recruiters this year are looking for candidates who specialise in artificial intelligence and Machine Learning. Unlike earlier, developer roles are in higher demand than user interface positions.

A similar pattern has emerged across other legacy IITs, including those in Delhi, Mumbai, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Varanasi (IIT-BHU).

“More companies, including core and startups, are participating this year. All of them have expressed interest in hiring a significant number of students,” sources told Business Standard.
