Former CEO of INX accused of killing daughter Sheena: What we know about Indrani Mukerjea

Indrani Mukerjea has been in the headlines after she was arrested on Tuesday by the Mumbai Police in connection of the murder of Sheena Bora in 2012, who was initially said to be her sister.

Mukerjea was produced before the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate court, which remanded her in police custody till 31 August. Her  role in the murder came to light after the police arrested the driver in a matter involving an unidentified pistol. According to reports , the driver confessed to having killed Sheena and having dumped the body. He also reportedly claimed he had been told to commit the murder by Indrani.

Here’s what is known about Indrani Mukerjea:

- Indrani Mukherjea, 43, is the wife of former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, who was the former CEO of Star India. She was part of the media industry herself as CEO of INX Media and INX News.

- The Mukerjeas established 9X Media in 2007 and she was the CEO while her husband was the chairman of the group.  9X Media was founded through two companies, INX Media Pvt Ltd and INX News Pvt Ltd. They both quit INX Media in 2009, according to Hindustan Times.  The company was later sold to Indi Media.

- Indrani and Peter married in 2002, the second marriage for both of them. The two have a one daughter from the marriage, Vidhie Mukerjea, apart from other children from their previous marriage.

- Prior to her marriage, she worked as a HR professional and was part of the Reliance group, says this Tehelka report.

- A report by The Telegraph  suggests that Indrani was actually the mother of the victim Sheena Bohra, and not her sister as was initially claimed, a fact later confirmed by Bohra’s brother Mikhail talking to Times Now. The father of the children is said to be someone who divided his time between Calcutta and Tripura.

Later, Indrani was married to a man who had businesses in Kolkata and Jamshedpur, the report said. The children were brought up by Indrani’s grandparents in Guwahati but moved to Mumbai after her marriage to Peter. The son works in an airline and Sheena had completes her graduation from St. Xaviers college. She was 24 at the time of her death in 2012.

- After Indrani quit her position at 9Xm, she is said to have had more or less disappeared from the public eye and spent a lot of time in UK, the  The Telegraph   report said. According to TV reports, Mikhail didn’t suspect anything amiss about Sheena’s disappearance three years back as his mother had told them that she was settled abroad.

- Peter Mukerjea has said in an interview to a television channel that he was told Sheena was in the US and had seen photographs of her. He has also denied knowing that Sheena and Mikhail were Indrani’s children and had they were her siblings.
