Delhi Police have detained the owner of a car in which a deadly explosion occurred near the Red Fort on Monday evening, claiming at least eight lives and destroying several vehicles.
According to an Economic Times report, citing officials, the accused, identified as Md Salman, was taken into custody in Gurugram, Haryana.
Police sources said Salman had previously sold the car to a person in Okhla. However, the vehicle remained registered in his name and bore a Haryana registration number plate.
“Delhi Police along with Gurugram Police detained Md Salman on Monday and is questioning him about the car. He had sold it to a person in Okhla named Devendra. Later, the vehicle was again sold to someone in Ambala and police are tracing the people,” ET quoted a senior police officer as saying.
Eight people died and 24 others were injured in a blast near the Red Fort on Monday evening, which took place during a busy time when the area was crowded. The injured were rushed to LNJP Hospital, a few kilometres away.
“The blast occurred in a moving Hyundai i20 car in which three people were sitting. We have not found any pellet or puncture in the body of the injured, which is unusual in a bomb blast. We are investigating all angles,” an official said.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed that the car involved in the explosion had occupants at the time.
Following the blast, a high alert was sounded across Delhi, with security beefed up at city borders and intensified vehicle checks.
