New Delhi: A grocery shop owner from Noida was arrested for stealing around 20 pieces of packed Karva Chauth ‘thali’ hampers from a wholesale market here in Sadar bazar on Thursday. The accused was identified as Navneet Kumar Singh, a resident of Noida; he was arrested within three hours of the theft. As per cops, a complaint was filed by one Naresh Kumar Gupta, who alleged that an unidentified thief stole his 20 sets of decorative thalis that were to be sold to Karva Chauth devotees. Kumar alleged that he had left the sack packed with the decorative thalis at a shop while he had gone get more items. On the basis of the complaint an FIR was registered under relevant sections of thievery. During investigation, Delhi police officials checked the CCTV footage of the nearby shops in which they spotted a man stealing the sack. “Further checking of the available CCTV in the market revealed that the accused had come on the bike,” officials said. Later the cops tracked down the accused and arrested him from his Noida home on the basis of the registration number of his bike. During interrogation, he confessed to police that he was unable to resist the beautifully decorated plates and flicked them when he saw them ‘unattended’ at the Sadar Bazar wholesale market. According to Delhi Police, ‘Operation Vighat’ has been launched in the area to keep a curb on the menace of pick-pocketing and street crime. Under the system, the staff of Sadar Bazar Police Station has been motivated to identify and nab the active criminals in the area."
