After a series of shameful and monstrous sexual assaults on children in schools, Bengaluru is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons. Five women, who were returning from a city ice-cream parlour on Saturday night, were harassed by a group of men.
The incident happened on Saturday at around 11.30 pm when the women on a weekend outing stopped their car near an ice cream parlour on MG Road and found to their shock unidentified men trying to open the doors of their vehicle.
As they were seated inside waiting for their driver who had gone to pick up ice cream for them, the men stared at them, stood around the vehicle and tried to open the doors, according to the complaint lodged by one of the victims.
Police said according to the complaint, three men were seen staring at them and they were later joined by two others who tried to open the car door. They even tried to open the door with an object on getting to know that the door was locked, the complaint said.
As the women started raising an alarm by repeatedly screaming for help and honking, the men fled from the spot, police said.
The women took photos and videos of the incident in which five men surrounded their car on MG road, after which the men threatened them. In the video, the women are seen screaming for help as the men walk towards their car and surround them. Despite the car being stopped on a busy road, no one came to help the women, even after they were shouting for help.
The women have also alleged that the men threatened them with a sharp object and told them to roll down their car windows, CNN-IBN reports. Most of the men were seen smiling shamelessly as they surrounded the car. The men were also seen flashing light from their mobile phones on the women.
A case has been registered with the Bengaluru police. Police say that a probe is underway and they hope to make arrests soon. Charges of outraging a woman’s modesty and stalking have been made against the men. “”….certain sections have been invoked like stalking, criminal intimidation and outraging the modesty of the women. Let the investigation take place. Let us detect the case. Let us nab the culprits," City Police Commissioner MN Reddi told reporters in Bengaluru.
