At least 20 people have been killed after a train ran over them in Bihar. The tragedy had occurred near Saharsa at the Dhamara railway station while they had been attempting to cross the track after getting down from another train. The train had been traveling at a high speed and it was not scheduled to make a stop at Dhamara, CNN-IBN said.
After the incident, an angry crowd reportedly pulled out the driver of the train and beat him, said a report on NDTV. Some railway staff have also reportedly been “held hostage”. The local police have reached the spot and are trying to control the crowd, the channel added.
Local villagers have gathered at the spot in large numbers, and administrative officials are trying to pacify them and get them to help rather than hinder rescue operations, CNN-IBN added.
The injured are being rushed to hospital, but authorities have been quoted as saying that the death toll could rise.
