In 2010, a 30-year old BPO employee was brutally raped by five men in Delhi's Dhaula Kuan area. In the aftermath the case, that came to be known as the 2010 Dhaula Kuan gangrape, led to an overhaul in the protection of employees who work late, with the Delhi police ordering BPO's to ensure their female employees are dropped home safely.
The sensational case concluded on Tuesday, after a Delhi court convicted the five men accused of rape. Here is a timeline of events:
November 24, 2010: Five men abducted a call centre executive, who hails from the northeast, and took her to the Mongolpuri area in New Delhi and gangraped her.
December 2, 2010: Police arrested two accused Shamshad alias Khutkan and Usman alias Kale from Haryana.
December 4, 2010: The victim identified Shamshad and Usman in a test identification parade in Tihar Jail.
December 4, 2010: Third accused Iqbal alias Bada Billi was arrested.
December 5, 2010: The fourth accused Shahid alias Chhota Billi, who had surrendered to police in Faridabad in connection with another case, was arrested.
December 6 , 2010: The fifth and last accused Kamruddin was arrested from Haryana.
June 2, 2014: The final arguments commenced in the case.
September 8, 2014: A Delhi court reserved its order.
September 22, 2014: The court defered the verdict after Usman alias Kale alleged that police tampered with the evidence to implicate him. The verdict was deferred to 10 October.
October 10, 2014: A Delhi court deferred the verdict till 14 October.
October 14, 2014: All five accused were convicted of rape. Court to pronounce sentence on 17 October.
