A Delhi-bound Air India Express flight flying from Bagdogra (Siliguri) made an emergency landing at the Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport after a smoke alarm went off mid-air.
The flight (IX1523), operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft, was diverted to Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow on Monday evening after smoke was detected in the avionics bay, an area that houses critical aviation electronics. Witnessing the alarming situation, the pilot issued a “Mayday” call—an internationally recognized distress signal, often used to signify life-threatening situations.
Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Lucknow was promptly alerted, and the aircraft was brought to land safely at around 5:20 PM. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.
After the terrifying ordeal, passengers were accommodated on alternate flights to Delhi, while a few others opted for full refunds. Some passengers were provided with hotel accommodations and rebooked on subsequent services. Confirming the incident, an Air India Express spokesperson said that the flight landed in Lucknow keeping passenger safety as the priority.
Following the incident, the aircraft was declared “Aircraft on Ground” (AOG), indicating a technical fault requiring immediate inspection and repairs before it can resume operations. The aircraft remains stationed at the Lucknow airport as technical teams carry out further checks.
