A full emergency was declared at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday after an incoming IndiGo flight from Visakhapatnam reported a suspected mid-air engine issue.
Officials said the alert was sounded at 10:39 am for flight 6E 579, with Runway 28 kept on standby to facilitate a safe landing. The Delhi Fire Services received the call at around 10:53 am and rushed multiple fire tenders to the airport.
The aircraft landed safely at 10:54 am without any incident. All 161 passengers and crew on board were unharmed, and no damage was reported.
Airport authorities said standard safety protocols were activated following the suspected technical snag, with airline staff and the Delhi International Airport operations team assisting passengers after landing.
In a statement, IndiGo said the issue was detected shortly before arrival, prompting the pilots to seek a priority landing.
“As a precautionary step and in accordance with standard operating procedure, the pilots requested priority landing and the aircraft landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi,” the airline spokesperson said.
The airline added that all relevant authorities were informed and the aircraft is undergoing necessary checks and maintenance.
Earlier this month, an Air India Express flight from Hyderabad to Phuket lost its nose wheels after a hard landing, forcing a temporary halt to operations at Phuket airport. In a separate incident last month, a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Leh made an emergency landing shortly after take-off due to an engine failure. The aircraft, carrying around 150 passengers, landed safely.
