Denied any relief by the Supreme Court, Nupur Talwar is expected to surrender before a Ghaziabad CBI court today, after a non-bailable warrant was issued against her for failing to appear before it during earlier hearings.
Nupur, who is accused along with her husband Rajesh of being involved in the murder of her teenage daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, left for the court today morning from their Delhi residence.
After surrendering before the special CBI court, Nupur’s lawyers are expected to apply for bail. However, the court could also remand her to judicial custody.
Nupur’s surrender before the court comes after the Supreme Court said it was not inclined to stay the execution of the non-bailable warrant issued by the lower court. The apex court also directed Nupur to appear before the CBI special court.
Her husband Rajesh, who is presently out on bail, has been appearing for the trial court hearings but the CBI has sought to have his bail cancelled.
CNN IBN reported that the trial court had barred the media from attending the trial proceedings today.
Nupur’s failure to appear before the trial court had resulted in the CBI seeking a non-bailable warrant against the dentist on 11 April. However, the investigating agency did not arrest her and had obtained an extension on the warrant till 30 April from the trial court while she approached the Supreme Court.
Aarushi was found dead with her throat slit at their Noida residence on the night intervening May 15 and 16, 2008, while the body of Hemraj was recovered from the terrace of the house the next day.
The Uttar Pradesh police had initially accused Rajesh of the murder but after the case was handed over to the CBI, the dentist was granted bail. Following that three others were also arrested by the CBI but granted bail and released from jail.
After failing to find any conclusive evidence the CBI had filed a closure report but the court had asked them to pursue the case against the murdered girl’s parents. The CBI had moved the Allahabad High Court seeking cancellation of Talwar’s bail.
