A special CBI court will record the statements of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar today in connection with the murder case of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj. The two are the main accused in the case.
The recording was scheduled to take place on Monday, but did not happen as the Talwar couple requested the court to grant them some time to file a petition in the Allahabad High Court, seeking the summoning of 14 witnesses.
The CBI special court granted the duo one day and fixed the date for the recording of their statement for the following day.
The reprieve came even after the Supreme Court refused to entertain the Talwar’s petition, on the basis that they could not challenge the trial’s court order, and adding that they should have approached the High Court first.
The trial court had dismissed the Talwar’s petition on 6 May, and had ordered the recording of Rajesh and Nupur’s statements.
The statement of AGL Kaul, the last prosecution witness, has already been recorded.
The CBI is arguing that the Talwars are responsible for the murder of both 14-year-old Aarushi, and their domestic help Hemraj, and that no outsider was present.
In his deposition before the special court, Kaul, who headed the CBI probe, had submitted that the agency’s investigation had revealed no evidence that any third person had entered the Talwar residence.
Aarushi was found dead with her throat slit in her bedroom on 16 May, 2008. The initial suspicion fell on Hemraj whose body was later found in the terrace at their residence in Jalvayu Vihar in Noida on the outskirts of Delhi.
