A case has been registered against Samajwadi Party (SP) Uttar Pradesh president Akhilesh Yadav and 35 of his partymen for allegedly violating the model code of conduct in Balrampur, police said.

Akhilesh addressed party workers while on way to Siddharth Nagar from Sharavasti last night without permission, District Magistrate Sunita Chaturvedi said.

An FIR has been lodged against Yadav and 35 SP party workers here, she said.

Previously, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded Election Commissioner SY Quraishi to take action against Law Minister Salman Khurshid for violating the code of conduct by his announcement of quotas for Muslims.

Khurshid had come under fire from the BJP for the announcement he made at Farrukhabad, where his wife Louise Khurshid is a Congress nominee. He had said that if Congress comes to power, the party will bring in reservation for Muslims.

The election commission had given him 48 hours to reply to BJP’s complaints.
