In times of distress, it is heartening to see people working with one another with no vested interests. During the Chennai floods, a spate that has claimed at least 269 lives, a dedicated few in the city have been putting animals in their thoughts and running rescue missions.

Samudra Gupta who runs The Pound , a Facebook page for rescued animals and their adoption, said that ordinary people had become extraordinary in testing times. “Chennai collectively is testament to this. The city has managed to break every barrier, that had preciously managed to fragment the same societies,” he said.

“These guys and girls, like the chaps from People For Cattle in India (PFCI) and other organisations, have been breaking into flood affected zones with makeshift rafts and pulling out animals in distress and their owners,” added Samudra.

And it is not just humans doing the rescuing of dogs, Fathima Shaw recounts how a dog helped her walk through dry areas on her way back home.
