After several close calls over the last six days, the 2026 ICC World Cup finally witnessed its first major upset on Friday with Zimbabwe pulling off a stunning 23-run victory over Australia in Colombo. The Chevrons had previously stunned the mighty Aussies in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007, collecting a five-wicket victory over Ricky Ponting’s men in Cape Town.

Nearly two decades later, the Sikandar Raza-led Zimbabwean team produced an encore of that performance at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium. Brian Bennett’s unbeaten 64 helped them post a competitive 164/2 on the board after being invited to bat by Travis Head, who continued to lead the Aussies in place of an injured Mitchell Marsh.
The fast-bowling pair of Blessing Muzarabani (4/17) and Brad Evans (3/23) later shared seven wickets between themselves as Zimbabwe bundled Australia out for 146 in reply, registering a convincing 23-run victory.
Matt Renshaw had briefly resurrected the Aussie chase after they were reduced to 29/4, top-scoring for his side with a 44-ball 65 and sharing a 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Glenn Maxwell (31). Australia, however, were back to losing wickets at regular intervals once the partnership was broken, and fell well short of the target despite Renshaw staying at he centre until the penultimate over.
How Zimbabwe’s victory bodes well for Team India
Australia are yet to defeat Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup, having lost both of their meetings so far. Zimbabwe had also famously shocked Kim Hughes’ Australians by 13 runs at Trent Bridge in the 1983 World Cup.
It’s also interesting to note that whenever Zimbabwe have defeated Australia in a World Cup – either ODI or T20I – India have gone on to win the tournament.

View AllKapil Dev and Co had prevented the might West Indians from winning a third consecutive World Cup in 1983 while MS Dhoni’s boys had won the inaugural T20 World Cup 24 years later in South Africa, registering a thrilling five-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.
Whenever Zimbabwe beats Australia in a World Cup, ODI or T20, it is a good omen for India. Why? Zim beat Aus in 1983, India won it; Zim beat Aus in 2007, India won the inaugural T20 World Cup. Will it be third time lucky now for India? #cricket

Beating Australia by 23 runs takes real character. And of course, Blessing turned out to be just that, a blessing in the truest sense, with a superb 4 wicket spell.
What an exciting tournament this is shaping up to be!

RPS is not for flat track bullies. You have to grind it here. Application than flair win you games here. Aussies had flair. Zimbabwe showed application. Who’s chance to fall next? Don’t mind another member of Big Three.
