Netherlands had the upper hand heading into the T20 World Cup Group A showdown against the United States of America in Chennai on Friday. The Dutchmen, after all, had nearly pulled off a surprise victory over Pakistan in the tournament opener last Saturday before thrashing Namibia by seven wickets with nearly two overs to spare.

The US too had put up an admirable fight against India in Mumbai hours after Pakistan’s thrilling three-wicket victory over Netherlands. The Monank Patel-led American side, however, found themselves staring at the exit sign after being handed a 32-run defeat against the Salman Ali Agha-led Pakistanis.
Saiteja, Harmeet star in USA’s dominant victory at Chepauk
Few, however, would have expected the United States to outplay Netherlands the way they did at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday, where the Americans brought their campaign back on track with a commanding 93-run victory and kept their Super 8 hopes hanging by a thread.
The US had posted a commanding 196/6 on the board after they were invited to bat by Dutch captain Scott Edwards at Chepauk, thanks to Saiteja Mukkamalla’s sparkling 79 off 51 deliveries as well as handy contributions from Shubham Ranjane (48 not out) and captain Patel (36).

Harmeet Singh (4/21) and Shadley van Schalkwyk (3/21) would then collect the lion’s share of wickets for USA while Mohammad Mohsin (2/19) chipped in with a couple of wickets as Netherlands were bowled out for just 103 in reply.

View AllNetherlands had briefly recovered from a shaky start thanks to a 32-run second-wicket partnership between Max O’Dowd and Bas de Leede – the latter top-scoring for the side with a 17-ball 23. O’Dowd’s dismissal off former Mumbai spinner Harmeet’s bowling, however, sparked a spectacular collapse that the Dutchmen could not recover from.
How USA’s triumph affects Group A
The United States moved past Netherlands to the third spot on the Group A standings, with India and Pakistan currently occupying the top two spots with four points each. Both the US and Netherlands currently are level on two points each with one game to go, but the American’ margin of victory in Chennai has resulted in a huge gulf between the two sides in terms of Net Run Rate.
While the US (+0.533) are closing in on Pakistan (+0.932) in terms of NRR, the corresponding number for Netherlands (-1.352) is only slightly better than that of Namibia (-2.884), who had suffered a defeat by an identical margin at the hands of India in Delhi on Thursday.
Which means that while US as well as Netherlands are mathematically alive in the race to the Super 8s, it’s the former who have a much better chance of making it to the second round.

The Americans will now fancy their chances of beating Namibia in their final group-stage outing and finish with four points and a positive NRR. They will then be hoping that Pakistan slips below them by losing both of their remaining matches – against India and Namibia on 15 and 18 February respectively.
They could also advance to the next round at India’s expense if the Suryakumar Yadav-led side lose to Pakistan on Sunday. India’s excellent NRR (+3.050), however, ensures they will remain at an advantage if they finish level on points with one or more teams.
Netherlands could also finish level on four points with USA and one of India or Pakistan if they beat the Men in Blue in their final group-stage match next week. Their poor NRR, however, puts them at a major disadvantage and makes their passage into the next round unlikely, if not impossible.
