The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 begins Saturday, February 7 jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka with yet again 20 teams participating in the tournament. A total of 55 matches will take place across the two countries with the final taking place in Ahmedabad, India on March 8.
While there is a controversy raging over Pakistan's decision to not play India in the upcoming tournament, the other games are all set in stone with teams already playing warm-up games to fine tune their preparations.
World Cups are important not only because of the prestige associated to it but also for the financial incentive it provides, especially to boards with poor revenues.
Let us take a look at the format of the 2026 T20 World Cup and also how much each team can earn through their finishes in the tournament.
2026 T20 World Cup format
The format of the 2026 edition of the T20 World Cup is exactly the same as the tournament that took place in 2024 when 20 teams played the event for the first time.
In the first round, 20 teams are divided into four groups of five teams each. Teams play other teams in their group in round-robin format. Top two teams from all four groups advance to the Super 8 stage.
Teams are already seeded for the Super 8 stage as per their ICC rankings. The first Super 8 group will have: India (X1), Australia (X2), West Indies (X3), South Africa (X4). The second Super 8 group will have: England (Y1), New Zealand (Y2), Pakistan (Y3), Sri Lanka (Y4).
