Virat Kohli’s Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 ended with a disappointing knock of six runs on Saturday in what is most likely his final innings in Australia. After scoring 17 in the first innings of the ongoing fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Kohli once again fell to pacer Scott Boland for just six as Steve Smith took the catch at the second slip.
This is the fourth time in the series that Kohli has got out to Boland and the disappointment was clear as the star batter was seen yelling and expressing disappointment after his dismissal. India had hoped for one final big knock from the 36-year-old to set a match-winning target. India currently trail in the series 2-1.
Kohli’s poor Australia tour ends in disappointment
Here’s how Boland performed against Kohli in the BGT 2024-25:
Innings: 5
Balls: 68
Runs: 28
Dismissals: 4
Most importantly this was the eighth time on the ongoing tour of Australia that Kohli got out caught behind. All of Kohli’s dismissals (eight) in the Border-Gavaskar 2024-25 series have been caught behind the wicket.
The only time he did not get out in the five-match series was during the second innings of the opening Perth Test when he scored a match-winning 100 not out which helped India win the match by 295 runs.
In Brisbane, he only batted once as the match ended in a draw.

All eyes on Kohli’s Test future
Kohli finishes the 2024-25 tour of Australia with 190 runs in five Test matches (9 innings) at an average of 23.75. Apart from that 100 in Perth, Kohli only scored 90 runs in the remaining eight innings as his weakness against the outside off ball was brutally exposed by the Aussie fast bowlers.
Overall in Australia, Kohli has scored 1542 runs in 18 matches (34 innings) at an average of 46.72. This includes seven hundreds and four fifties with a best score of 169.
All eyes will now be on Kohli’s immediate Test future as India look to rebuild after a chastening experience in Australia where the poor batting form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli severely dented India’s strength.
The Indian cricket team also needs to win the Sydney Test to have any chance of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final.
