IPL 2021, RCB vs MI Highlights: Bangalore's bowlers shine in 54-run win over Mumbai

Glenn Maxwell, PotM: It was pretty close to a perfect day, We just did everything right. I’d like to point out the way Virat and KS got us out of the powerplay and set up the perfect foundation for us.

I suppose the switch hit or the switch sweep is something I’ve worked on a lot over the years and it’s become a real strength of mine. With that short side, I was trying to target it as much as possible.

The bowling is something I’ve worked on as well. I had a full pre-season while playing with Victoria, so that really helped me.

Virat Kohli: Very happy with the win, and especially with the way we won. It was a difficult start, when Jasprit bowled that amazing second over. It was important from thereon to stamp our presence in the game and take some risks. I thought we got par, towards the end. 166 has been more or less par here. 

When you’re up against people like Jasprit Bumrah, you have to show your presence or you’ll be in trouble.

I think our game was perfect. Maybe, if I had to pick something, I would say that our batting can improve a little, but overall, this was a 10/10 performance.

Rohit Sharma: Yeah I thought it was a fantastic bowling effort on our part. We pulled things really well towards the back end, when it was looking like they would get 180 or 180+, but the batters let us down.

The batters have consistently failed to build on the opening partnership, we’ve had a good chat about it with the batters including myself. As for me, I played a bad shot and got out, that was a game-changing moment for me. I think they bowled really well, kept the lines tight. We need to find ways to bounce back from whatever situation we’re in. We’ve done that in the past but it’s just not happening this season. 

Ishan Kishan is a talented player, we just need to provide him with the sort of freedom he needs. He had a terrific IPL last year, so we want to back his natural game, which is to go after the bowlers. That’s why he batted up the order, before Surya. This was free license for him to go and play his game. But I don’t want to put pressure on the guy, he’s young and he’s making his way into international cricket.

Yuzvendra Chahal has his third wicket! Jasprit Bumrah tried to sweep, but his shot is mistimed, and he misses the ball. Rest of the over is perfect as well, wicket maiden.

Harshal Patel in. MI need a typically explosive burst from Pandya and Pollard. First ball is a wide. Hardik Pandya departs as Mumbai continue to crumble! MI are facing a RRR of over 15 and Pandya tried to up the ante, but he skies his shot, and Virat Kohli takes the catch with ease. Patel with the wicket. Gorgeous stuff from Harshal Patel! Back to back wickets, he’s got Pollard’s leg stump!! TAKE A BOW HARSHAL PATEL! It’s a hat-trick for the RCB bowler, as he gets Rahul Chahar out LBW! Simply sensational!

After 16 overs, Mumbai Indians 105/5 ( Kieron Pollard 7 , Hardik Pandya 3)

Daniel Christian comes out, he’s bowled one over so far and he went for 15. Can he course correct a little and improve his economy? He starts off with a dangerous delivery, which Pollard nearly drags on to the stumps. Pollard then clips to fine leg and runs two. Third delivery is a single, good bowling from Christian, he’s bowling to his field and really cramping Pollard and Hardik. Another single from an identical ball. Shorter delivery, and it’s pulled away by Pollard, but MI get only one run. Another short ball, another pull, another single. Great over, six off it. RRR is now 15.25.

The Mumbai Indians need 69 runs in 36 balls. Not an impossible task by any stretch of the imagination. Mohammed Siraj is reintroduced into the bowling attack. SIRAJ GETS A WICKET! It comes from a fairly innocuous ball, it’s a wide delivery that Suryakumar Yadav stretches to reach, and edges to short third man. Just two singles off the over, pretty great bowling from Siraj!

After 14 overs, Mumbai Indians 97/4 ( Suryakumar Yadav 8 , Kieron Pollard 2)

Maxwell to bowl his final over, he’s been pretty good so far. HE GETS EVEN BETTER! Krunal tries to dance down the pitch and hit big but it ends in him being sent back to the dressing room! Huge wicket this for Maxwell! Kieron Pollard comes on now, he’s one a real danger man. Oooh ooh ooh, could Pollard be out here?! Maxwell is sure that’s LBW, but the umpire is not convinced. Virat Kohli decides to review, and it’s an unsuccessful one, that was missing the wickets. Two singles to end the over and bring Maxwell’s time with the ball to an end. He’s gotten two big wickets and a half-century here, he should be a nailed on contender for PoTM. Anyway, we head into a strategic timeout.

After 13 overs, Mumbai Indians 93/3 ( Suryakumar Yadav 6 , Krunal Pandya 5)

Harshal Patel’s second over, and Suryakumar runs a quick double. Big call for LBW from Patel, but Kohli rather wisely decides not to review, that was always sliding down. One leg bye comes off it. Dot and then a big bouncer from Patel, that one was way above the shoulder, it’ll be a wide. Slower ball and Krunal Pandya awkwardly pushes it away, that would’ve been a catch if it was hit in any other direction. Two singles to end the over, but the RRR has crept up to 10.42. At some point, someone needs to start hitting.

Glenn Maxwell back to bowl his third over. Starts with a dot, two singles and another dot. Bangalore are in a pretty good position at the moment, if they can stifle Krunal and Suryakumar, they might just have this in the big. Two singles to end, four runs from the over.

When it rains, it pours. Mumbai were cruising just a couple of overs, but they’ve now lost their third wicket, after Ishan Kishan skies to short third man! Chahal gets the wicket! Great over from Chahal, 3 runs off it and a wicket.

Glenn Maxwell continues, and he concedes a single on the first ball. Two more singles follow. The required run rate is a bit over. OUCH! Ishan Kishan tries to hit down the ground, and he ends up piledriving the ball into the arm of his own skipper Rohit Sharma. It was about to hit Sharma smack dab in the middle of his face, and Sharma blocked it reflexively. We take a slight break in play as the phsyios rush onto the field to check out the injured player. Single, and then Rohit is back on strike. He tries to go big, but ends up hitting straight to Padikkal at long-on!!

After 9 overs, Mumbai Indians 75/1 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 41 , Ishan Kishan 6)

Chahal to continue, can he come up with some more magic and send another MI batter packing? Dot and then Ishan Kishan comes down the pitch and dispatches a FOUR right over Chahal. A dot, and then a single. Ooh, Ishan Kishan was almost in trouble there, he tried to run a quick single, but was turned down by Rohit Sharma, after which he had very little time to turn tail and sprint back to safety. He makes it over the line with a second to spare.

Glenn Maxwell to bowl now. A couple of singles in the first four balls, Maxwell looks dangerous. Sharma works it to deep square runs two. Wide. OH LORD, HUGE HIT FROM ROHIT SHARMA! Hammered over deep midwicket for SIX!

Magic man Yuzvendra Chahal is brought into the bowling attack. He has the ability to flip the tide of matches at whim, but he’s had a tough few weeks lately. What does he have in his locker tonight? Single on the first ball, and then two dots before he gets the wicket of Quinton de Kock! RCB desperately needed a wicket, and they have it, after de Kock hits to Maxwell at deep midwicket. Lovely catch as well from Maxwell.

After 6 overs, Mumbai Indians 56/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 29 , Quinton de Kock (W) 24)

Harshal Patel to come in from around the wicket. Dot, single and dot to begin. Sharma pulls to long-on and then runs a double. Wide from Patel. Single and dot to end the over. Just five runs off it. Strategic timeout now.

After 5 overs, Mumbai Indians 51/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 26 , Quinton de Kock (W) 23)

Daniel Christian is back into the XI today, and it’s his turn to bowl. Can he dislodge one of the opening pair? Not on the evidence of the first delivery, it’s hit firmly down the ground by Quinton de Kock for FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries for de Kock, he backs away and hammers it through the covers! Dot ball, and then de Kock runs a quick double, as Padikkal pulls off some great fielding to stop a boundary. Single and then the third FOUR of the over as Rohit Sharma hits to deep square leg, where Shahbaz completely screws up his attempt at stopping the ball, somehow going past it entirely and letting it cross the boundary line. It brings up fifty runs for MI as well.

After 4 overs, Mumbai Indians 36/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 22 , Quinton de Kock (W) 12)

Siraj returns to bowl. Dot and then de Kock opens up his body and sends it off for FOUR between cover and cover point! Ooh, de Kock was almost out twice there, initially Siraj appeals for LBW and then after de Kock attempts the single, Siraj tries to get him run out at the bowler’s end! FOUR! Down the ground and Rohit Sharma has just about managed to get enough bat on it to reach the boundary ropes.

After 3 overs, Mumbai Indians 27/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 18 , Quinton de Kock (W) 8)

Kyle Jamieson continues. Two singles and a dot to begin. Oh oh oh, it’s a free-hit, Jamieson’s foot lands miles outside the crease! He bowls a low full toss, and Rohit Sharma bangs it down the ground for FOUR! OOOOH, BEAUTIFUL STUFF FROM ROHIT SHARMA! He opens the face of the bat and cuts late past backward point! Another FOUR! A third boundary in as many balls! Big swing from Sharma and it just about beats the diving mid-on fielder to make it to the rope! Great over for MI, 17 runs off it.

Mohammed Siraj from the other end. First two balls are prodded away hesitantly by Rohit Sharma, he looks a little nervy out there. Siraj is getting very good swing. Oh, brilliant fielding from Virat Kohli at midwicket, he flies through the air to prevent a boundary. FOUR! Lovely flick from Quinton de Kock, beats Shahbaz’s dive at deep square leg!

After 1 overs, Mumbai Indians 5/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 2 , Quinton de Kock (W) 3)

Jamieson gets us underway, and Rohit Sharma is off the mark with a single on the first ball. Big call for LBW on the second ball, but de Kock doesn’t look too worried and neither does the umpire. Double, dot and two singles follow.

Trent Boult entrusted with the final over, and he could pick up a couple of wickets here, he excels at finishing off teams. First ball is a dot and then Boult strikes, it’s a gorgeous yorker and the off stump is uprooted! Shabaz Ahmed is OUT! Single, dot and two singles to finish. RCB manage to put up a score of 165/6

Jasprit Bumrah to bowl his final over. Maxwell pulls out the helicopter shot on his first delivery and splits deep mid-wicket and long-on perfectly! It’s FOUR! OUT! When you need a wicket, you call Jasprit Bumrah! The MI pacer gets Glenn Maxwell’s wicket after the Australian hits straight to Boult at long-on! MAKE THAT A DOUBLE! Two wickets in two balls for Bumrah! How good is this guy?! AB de Villiers edges it behind to the keeper.

After 18 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 156/3 ( Glenn Maxwell 52 , AB de Villiers 11)

In case you forgot he was out there, Glenn Maxwell reverse-sweeps an Adam Milne slower ball for SIX! That one just looped over short third man’s head and landed just past the boundary rope. He follows it up with a FOUR! He shapes himself and reverse-ramps past short third man! Beautiful work from Maxwell. FOUR more, full 360-degree play from the marvellous Australian! He slaps it wide of mid-off! Glenn Maxwell then runs a quick double to bring up his half-century!

After 17 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 139/3 ( Glenn Maxwell 35 , AB de Villiers 11)

Jasprit Bumrah returns, and is whacked over long-on! for SIX by AB de Villiers! The South African is so unbelievably dangerous, and even Bumrah isn’t spared his wrath. Two singles, and then a wide from Bumrah. Oh my word, take a bow AB! It’s a short delivery, and he shows some incredible improvisation to hit it straight down the ground for FOUR!

After 16 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 126/3 ( Glenn Maxwell 34 , AB de Villiers 0)

Milne replaces Chahar. Two singles to begin. RCB have slowed down just a little bit. Oh wow, what a clever shot from Glenn Maxwell! He uses the pace of Milne and reverse-ramps that over short third man for FOUR! Takes a single off the next ball to bring up the fifty-run mark in the partnership. VIRAT KOHLI DEPARTS The RCB skipper misjudges a pull, and a top edge sends the ball soaring up into the air and back down into the hands of the fielder at deep square leg.

After 15 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 119/2 ( Virat Kohli (C) 50 , Glenn Maxwell 28)

Trent Boult to bowl. 50 up for Virat Kohli, his 42nd in the IPL! It’s been a typically composed and calm knock from the RCB captain, who looks intent on playing right until the end. Two dots in a row, and there’s a huge, huge call for LBW from Boult on the third. The umpire says not out, and well, MI don’t have a review left thanks to that slightly pointless review they wasted in the previous over. Single and dot to finish, pretty good over from Boult.

Rahul Chahar to bowl his final over. The spinner has been pretty good for Mumbai so far. Single and Kohli is on strike. Dot, and then a single, Kohli now on 49, just one run off the half century. SIX! Glenn Maxwell pulverizes the ball with a massive hit over deep point! That was sent high into the night sky by the Australian, lovely, brutal hitting. Two dot balls to end the over, there’s a big call for LBW from Chahar on the final ball. The umpire isn’t having it at all. Rohit Sharma then decides to review it though. Ooh, that looks painful on replay, it hits Maxwell in the upper thigh/family jewels region. No contact with the bat. Pitching outside leg though, not out.

After 13 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 109/2 ( Virat Kohli (C) 48 , Glenn Maxwell 20)

Adam Milne returns to the bowling attack, and he’s greeted with a FOUR! Maxwell pulls to deep midwicket to bring up the 100-run mark for RCB! His next delivery is a wide, as wide as can be. It almost lands on the grass. Oh wait, it might have! Yes that’s a no-ball and it’s a free hit. Maxwell takes the opportunity with both hands, and hits a SIX! Or a FOUR! One of the two, it was a bit too close to call, landed right on the rope. Replay shows it’s a four. Dot and leg bye follow. Kohli runs a single, he’s now on 48. Kohli steps up on the final ball and hits it right back to Milne. Milne spots him out of the crease and throws, but he misses the wicket and Kohli returns to safety. That was a bit vicious there from Milne, might have been trying to get a bit of Kohli as well as the wicket with that throw. Anyway, time for a strategic timeout. What solution does Rohit Sharma have for his current quandary.

Krunal Pandya returns, and he begins with a wide. There’s some controversy about it, it seemed like a legitimate delivery, but he doesn’t complain too much. Ah okay, the replay proves that it was the right call, it was a whisker wide. Single and dot, before Kohli lets loose with a drive towards long-off. Big Kieron Pollard just about stops it going over the boundary rope with some awkward fielding, but it gets the job done. Just a double. MAXWELL GETS INTO THE HITTING! Lovely switch-hit from Maxwell, and it flies into the stands over deep point for SIX! Single to end the over, 12 from it.

After 11 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 85/2 ( Virat Kohli (C) 43 , Glenn Maxwell 4)

After a Krunal Pandya over which resulted in 7 runs, Chahar continues. Dot, single and dot to begin. Chahar is really piling on the pressure at the moment, and the new man Glenn Maxwell looks a bit shaky. Dot and two singles to end the over. Only three off it, good third over for Chahar.

After 9 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 75/2 ( Virat Kohli (C) 38 , Glenn Maxwell 0)

Rahul Chahar continues, he was a bit expensive in the last over, so he’ll want to prevent leaking any more runs. First ball is a single, before Kohli steps up and unleashes a cannon of a shot straight down the ground, one bounce and then out for FOUR! He’s got an ominous look about him, Rohit will be hoping to get him out soon. Oh lord, MI are just all over the place at the moment, Virat Kohli has been dropped for the second time in a row, this time it’s Hardik Pandya who makes the mistake. It was a tough-ish catch, but a fielder of Pandya’s calibre will be disappointed at having missed that. Bharat then unleashes an enormous SIX! He hammers a slog sweep into the top tier at deep square! Oh, he’s OUT! Lofted shot and he has picked out the man at deep cover. Chahar gets his wicket.

Krunal Pandya continues. Single, wide and dot to begin. RCB’s batters run two, they’re doing very well to keep the scoreboard ticking even when they aren’t hitting boundaries. Dot and then a single. It’s a good final ball, and only five runs come from the over. Nice, tight bowling from Pandya.

After 7 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 58/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 32 , Srikar Bharat (W) 22)

Rahul Chahar in to bowl, he’ll be looking to make up for his fielding faux pas early on when he kinda sorta dropped Virat Kohli. Starts with two dot balls in a row, before Srikar Bharat gets down on a knee and unleashes a powerful slog sweep to send the ball into the stands at deep square for SIX! The fifty-run mark has come up for RCB. Bharat then slices over point, and the pair run their lungs off for three. Single and a dot to end.

After 6 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 48/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 31 , Srikar Bharat (W) 13)

A bit of spin then, as we see Krunal Pandya come into the Mumbai Indians bowling attack. Single, one leg bye and then a dot to begin. On the fourth ball, Bharat is almost run out, but he’s saved after making it to safety with a dive. He’s also helped out by a poor throw from the fielder. Two singles to finish the over and we it’s the end of the powerplay.

After 5 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore 44/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 29 , Srikar Bharat (W) 12)

Adam Milne’s turn to have a crack at Kohli and Bharat, they’re looking dangerous so Rohit Sharma will really be hoping for a wicket from him. Two singles and a dot to begin, before Virat Kohli unleashes a vintage drive between cover and mid-off for FOUR! Oh, he’s gone one better and hit a SIX on the very next ball! This is some excellent stroke play from Kohli. Single to round out the over.
